A new artificial reef program has started off the coast of Palm Beach. This past Monday, November 16th, 55 artificial reefs were deployed off the coast as part of the new project called 1,000 Mermaids that works with the Ocean Rescue Alliance. 

The new project is an artificial reef project that creates reef module to make more habitat on the bottom of the ocean for marine life. The artificial reefs arrived to the Port of Palm Beach on Friday of last week and the reefs were received and picked up to start the project. The non-profit, Ocean Rescue Alliance says that reef builders, and donations helped to make these artificial reef structures possible.

Every day the Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts several events for the public to learn more about the sea turtle research and rehabilitation center and marine life. On Saturday mornings, the center hosts a Kids Fishing Program aimed for children ages 8 through 12.

Participants in the Fishing Program will learn the techniques and tricks to fishing from the Juno Beach Pier. The program will teach and explain the concepts of fishing, casting, fish handling, knot tying, and the proper catch and release techniques.  The program will also include information on how to be ethical anglers and reduce their impact on marine life.

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach has recorded the third highest record numbers for the 2020 Sea Turtle Nesting Season. The Sea Turtle Nesting season begins on February 28th and last until October 31st and despite having an active hurricane season, the center recently announced another successful season.

During the few months of the nesting season, Marinelife Center staff surveyed the beach in northern Palm Beach County. Researchers have said that this year they have documented 16,935 sea turtle nests along the beach. The nests included: 286 leatherbacks, 13,059 loggerheads, 3,590 green sea turtle nests.

Lighthouse Sunset Tour: Wednesday, November 4th, 11th, and 18th

Climb to the top of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse on Wednesday nights and take advantage of the spectacular sunset views and watch the lighthouse turn on to illuminate the sky. In addition, visitors will get an inside look at the Lighthouse Watchroom to see how everything works and learn the history of the lighthouse along the way. The tours last approximately an hour and tickets must be purchased online prior to the event.  The tours start at 4:45 pm.

Cruise ships are a key point of Southeast Florida tourism and hospitality, however the pandemic has rocked the boat. With ports in Palm Beach down to Miami, the local cruise industry has been impacted in a big way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday announced that it will allow its “no-sail order” to expire this weekend. The change is a big win for the Florida cruise industry, which has been shuttered completely since March.  

Cruise stocks rose Friday after the CDC announced it will replace its nearly 8-month old no-sail order with a less restrictive “Conditional Sailing Order.” The no-sail order has been in place since mid-March due to the coronavirus, but will expire on Saturday night and not be extended, the CDC said.…
