The 9/11 Heroes 5K Run is an event uniting communities beyond U.S. borders, in which we remember the sacrifices of the heroes of 9/11 honoring veterans, first responders, civilians and military personnel and families of the fallen. 

The run takes place all over the world, on or near September 11th, and are organized completely by local community volunteers. The nearest run will be in Palm City on September 3rd at Cummings Library. The Florida DEP has recently launched a #SkipTheStraw movement to combat plastic pollution in the environment. Skip the Straw is a pledge for residents to say "no" to straws for just one week- in hopes this starts a trend and forms a habit of ditching single-use plastics.

Plastic straws are easily picked up by wind and can end up in our oceans. In fact it's in the top 5 trash items collected from our waterways every year. In most places straws aren't recyclable, and when they aren't disposed of properly they can not only endanger wildlife, but also humans as they are broken down into microplastics which travel through the food chain. Many builders are incorporating houses with smart home technologies, as the majority of buyers say they're willing to pay extra to have it, according to research from John Burns Real Estate Consulting.

Of 23,000 people surveyed in the consulting firm's research, 60% said they'd pay more for a home if it was outfitted with a smart thermostat. Even more people said they'd pay for a home with phone-accessible security cameras and smart locks. 

Of the 300 home builders surveyed, more than half say they're incorporating smart home technology into their new construction.

This Sunday, August 26th from noon-2 p.m. is Cycle for the Cure at the CycleBar in Palm Beach Gardens.

The event is a fundraiser for Komen South Florida, an organization whose efforts to provide breast health education, screening and treatment in the South Florida community and research to find a cure for breast cancer.

If you like art, you definitely need to participate in the Delray Beach monthly art walk. It's a self-guided tour of Delray's finest art districts, allowing you to meet local designers and discover works of all kinds.

The art walk takes place on the first Friday of every month from 6-9 p.m. You go at your own pace and stop at the spots on the map in whatever order you want. Delray is a hotspot for art, culture, entertainment and great food, so exploring the city in such a way is an awesome experience.

The Palm Beach County Boxed for Success School Supply Drive saw a record-breaking year for donations, and local kids have plenty of supplies for the school year thanks to the generosity of area residents.

The drive received nearly 30,000 items including notebooks, paper, pencils, markers, crayons, tissues and glue sticks. Cash donations also totalled $14,600 which was by far the most money in the drive’s six-year history, doubling its previous high of $7,000 in 2014. 

All of the supplies and monetary donations were evenly distributed to three Title 1 elementary schools in the county, where more than 90 percent of those students' families are low income.

Luxury real estate in Palm Beach County saw a double-digit increase in home sales last month compared to July 2017. The number of home sales above $600,000 rose 26.6% over last year and homes in the $1 million+ price range saw a whopping 30.6% increase. It's the first time the county has seen such a spike.

New luxury construction is being developed all over the Palm Beaches which helped drive sales, as many people would rather purchase a new property opposed to possibly having to put up thousands in upgrades on older home. Reports have also shown a notable increase in people from the Northeast relocating to the area for job opportunity, higher pay, recreation and less tax.
