Palm Beach County and Loggerhead Marinelife Center have collaborated to ban balloons from 11 local beachfront parks in an effort to help keep sea turtles safe. Afterall, this area is a haven for sea turtles to nest, particularly for the endangered Loggerhead. As we are in the middle of nesting season, the ban is just in time. Loggerhead Marinelife Center teams have cleaned more than 1,000 balloons off of Juno Beach alone. Balloons are dangerous to sea turtles because they can be mistaken for a jellyfish- the Loggerhead's favorite snack. The balloon strings can also entangle the turtles.      Loggerhead Marinelife Center has teamed up with precincts spanning across 130 miles of the south Florida coastline to ban balloons. Eleven…

Late last month, a new park opened in Jupiter to offer more launch access to the 40,000 recreational boaters in Palm Beach County. Waterway Park is located on a peninsula running 31 acres along the Intracoastal. Amenities include 3 boat ramps, a launch basin, boardwalk, four floating docks, a fishing pier and a restroom facility.

During construction, volunteers planted 35,000 red mangrove seedlings, creating a 1-acre maritime hammock at the end of the peninsula. There are also 11 acres of marsh-grass wetlands set aside as a tortoise preserve which 60 gopher tortoises have been moved to.

The multipurpose park allows boaters more space to park trailers and launch boats. For those without boats, it’s a place to perhaps launch a kayak, throw…
