Many people confuse Cinco de Mayo as Mexico’s Independence Day, but Cinco de Mayo is the day that Mexico defeated France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. The Mexican Army was led under General Ignacio Zaragoza in the victory over the French. Independence Day in Mexico is September 16th. On September 16th, 1810, Father Hidalgo, a priest and leader, called for Mexico’s independence from Spain, bringing the Spanish colonial rule to an end.
