The name October comes for the Latin word Octo, meaning eight because this was the eighth month in the early months of the Roman calendar. When the Roman calendar adopted the 12-month calendar, the name October stuck even though its currently the tenth month of the year.

Calling all space fans, get excited because Mars is going to be close to Earth. Today, Tuesday, October 6th, Mars will come the closest to Earth and it will not happen again until 2035 according to NASA.

Known as the Mars Close Approach, the event happens every two years and follows Earth and Mars. Normally the distance between the two is 38.6 million miles. Today, the closest distance will be 33.9 million miles away from Earth. When Mars, Earth, and the sun become aligned, Mars will be visible for much of the night in the southern sky and will be at its highest point around midnight according to NASA.

Another great city to explore is Stuart, Florida. Stuart is a city located on the water in Martin County, just north of Jupiter. The city is located on Florida’s southeast Atlantic coast.

Stuart is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World” because of its location along the banks of the St. Lucie River and the eastern point of the Okeechobee waterways, many sailfish are found in the waters.

Local favorite tropical paradise, Peanut Island, has reopened as of 10/01/2020, and locals are fueling up their boats and ready for a weekend in the sun off Singer Island.

Peanut Island is one of the many treasures of the Palm Beach County outdoors. This small island near the mouth of Palm Beach Inlet is known as a Florida wonderland of boats at the sandbar, snorkeling, camping, and kayaking. 

Shuttles will be running to and from Peanut Island from 10am until 5pm, and the last boat to the island leaves Riviera Beach City Marina at 3:30pm.

Sailfish Marina has announced that they are re-opening the Palm Beach Water Taxi this Friday, October 2nd, with a few new guidelines.

The water taxi will be running Thursday through Sunday with departure times at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.

The water taxi will not be making any pickups or drop-offs at Peanut Island, so they will only be giving narrated tours until further notice. The maximum capacity on both water taxis will be at the discretion of the captain to provide for social distancing, and masks will be mandatory at check-in, but not for the duration of the tour. Mates will sanitize all surfaces between tours, hand sanitizer will be made available, and there will be no temperature check before boarding.

Located within five miles north of Jupiter in Martin County is the Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The Florida State Park sits between Tequesta and Hobe Sound. The state park is named after a Quaker merchant named Jonathan Dickinson who wreaked his boat off the coast in 1696.

During the second World War, the area served as an Army base and home to Camp Murphy. The barracks are still visible throughout the park today. Following the war, the land was transferred back to the state in 1947 to be used as a state park.  The Jonathan Dickinson State Park officially opened to the public in 1950.
