Martin County’s largest vegetable garden is Kai-Kai Farms. The owners of Kai-Kai Farms, Carl Frost and Diane Cordeau, were two lab technicians for the University of Florida, Indian River Research and Education Center that met, fell in love, and married in 1988. It was a match made in sustainable farming heaven.

Their love of traveling brought them to the Solomon Islands and pointed them in the direction of what their life’s work would be. Upon reaching the islands, they were greeted by various tribal chiefs and invited for kai-kai. They learned kai-kai meant food gatherings. They learned how they grew vegetables in a very basic way. They decided that farming would be their future.

A rare North Atlantic right mother whale and calf appeared this week in the Sebastian Inlet and meandered into the mouth of the Indian River Lagoon.

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered species of large whales.  According to the World Wildlife Federation, there are approximately 500 whales and very little population growth even though seven decades of protection have been in place.  The whale is usually found along the Atlantic Coastline, primarily the United States and Canada.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been following the particular North Atlantic right whale for four years now.  They have named her “Clipper” for she has a missing section of her fluke. These whales migrate every year in…

More than 1,600 students each year join or partake in the Art Council of Martin County.  The Art Council of Martin County provides a wide variety of programs that benefit the community through the arts.  The Council believes that educating the youth of the community about art is vitally important to their creativity and thusly strengthening their leadership skills and aiding their academic development. 

The Art Council also joins forces with the Martin Memorial Hospital and encourages of the advantages of art helping heal hearts, minds, and bodies.  They have assisted Alzheimer’s patients, along with arts therapists, in the adult care program.
