It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Palm Beach Island. The Flagler Museum has transformed into a Christmas wonderland as part of their annual holiday tradition, Christmas at Whitehall.

During the holiday season, the first floor of Whitehall, also known as The Flagler Museum, is decorated in traditional Gilded Age holiday decorations. The main focal point of the holiday décor is the large 16-foot Christmas tree in the Grand Hall, filled with Gilded Age style ornaments and colored lights. The exterior and front gates of the grand estate are decorated with holiday wreathes and lights.

The Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society has partnered together with Florida Power and Light Company to present Zoo Lights this holiday season.

Zoo Lights has quickly became a South Florida holiday tradition for families and friends. After hours, while the animals are sleeping, the Palm Beach Zoo will be illuminated for the holiday season. The zoo will be decorated with over 1 million eco-friendly lights every night.

Zoo Lights will be aglow from 6 pm to 9 pm with unique lights and theme displays from the entrance through the Florida Wetlands, Tropics of Americas and new to this year, Asia. Santa will be stopping by this year through December 23rd for your photo opportunity. Zoo Lights will feature special animal encounters and special treats.

On Saturday mornings throughout the year, The Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts a Self-Guided Beach Cleanup. Every weekend, volunteers head to the beach to participate in helping to keep our local beaches and ocean clean from debris and trash.

The Self-Guided Beach Cleanup is a new program this year that has been added weekly to their event calendar. Those who wish to participate are asked to stop by the Marine Debris Sorting Station on the back deck of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center to pick up your beach cleanup supplies. Once supplies picked up, volunteers can make their way down to the beach to begin. When finished, simply bring your trash bag back to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center and pick up a free t-shirt as a Thank You for helping gift.

Grab your rod and reel Southeast Florida fishermen!  Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced the state is extending its Gulf red snapper season for several more dates in November. Additional dates will be November 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. These added dates coincide with a statewide license-free saltwater fishing day, which will be on November 28, 2020. 

During this season, private recreational anglers may fish red snapper in Gulf state and federal waters. However, state for-hire operations are limited to fishing for red snapper in Gulf state waters only.

A new artificial reef program has started off the coast of Palm Beach. This past Monday, November 16th, 55 artificial reefs were deployed off the coast as part of the new project called 1,000 Mermaids that works with the Ocean Rescue Alliance. 

The new project is an artificial reef project that creates reef module to make more habitat on the bottom of the ocean for marine life. The artificial reefs arrived to the Port of Palm Beach on Friday of last week and the reefs were received and picked up to start the project. The non-profit, Ocean Rescue Alliance says that reef builders, and donations helped to make these artificial reef structures possible.

Attention dog owners!  Mounts Botanical Garden, 531 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach is turning its annual Dogs’ Day in the Garden into a monthly event, beginning Sunday, December 13, 2020. Bring your four- legged family member for a delightful garden stroll on the second Sunday each month, 9 am-3 pm.

Every day the Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts several events for the public to learn more about the sea turtle research and rehabilitation center and marine life. On Saturday mornings, the center hosts a Kids Fishing Program aimed for children ages 8 through 12.

Participants in the Fishing Program will learn the techniques and tricks to fishing from the Juno Beach Pier. The program will teach and explain the concepts of fishing, casting, fish handling, knot tying, and the proper catch and release techniques.  The program will also include information on how to be ethical anglers and reduce their impact on marine life.
