This is the last week to catch “CONTEMPO: PUSHING THE LIMIT on ART” exhibit at the Lighthouse Art Center, Tequesta.  This exhibit features juried art of contemporary art across all media.  Expect to see the unexpected and use of innovative materials. Anticipate “unusual treatment of subject matter, unconventional mediums and edgy techniques – this is not your parent’s art exhibition!”

Guest curator Nelson Hallonquist, co-director of the Gavlak Gallery in Palm Beach, selected 34 works of art.  Artists from 18 states submitted works on featured art.

Uber is a private mobile transportation network app that allows consumers to request transportation from drivers.  Founded in 2009, Uber has expanded its service to 53 countries and over 200 cities worldwide.  It is like a cab service but the drivers use their own personal cars.

Uber is now available in South Florida. The ride sharing company launched its app-based service in Miami last summer.  It has expanded its service and is available in the West Palm Beach and Jupiter areas.  Prices are averaging 25% less than taxi’s. After requesting a ride, a photo of the driver will flash up on your smartphone, letting you know who the driver is and the make of vehicle.

South Florida Weather

You can almost continuously tip your sun hat by the ending of another flawless day in South Florida. It is the state with the sunniest winter climate on the east side of the United States as well as the highest temperatures on average during the winter months. “The climate has always been Florida's most important natural resources, which is reflected in its official nickname, the Sunshine State."

Try something different and go stargazing!  Experience the natural beauty that is the South Florida night sky.  Stargazing is the simply the act of observing stars, moons, planets and other objects in the night sky.  Humans have been observing the stars for thousands of years.  All that is needed is a clear sky away from the bright lights of the city.  Aficionados bring charts, binoculars and telescopes to see distant stars and constellations. 

There are 88 constellations that can be seen from almost anywhere in the United States, but not all at once.  As the Earth makes its orbit, the placement of stars in the sky appears to move.

Jupiter Medical Center announced it has received its largest ever donation! The $15 million gift was from the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation and the Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust.  The donation will allow the Jupiter-based nonprofit hospital to develop pediatric services in a partnership with Miami Children’s Hospital.

Doctors at Miami Children's Hospital have been using “telehealth technology” to consult on patient care at Jupiter Medical Center for over a year. It is anticipated that the pediatric unit should be open by the end of 2015. The first phase will be a 12-bed pediatric unit at Jupiter Medical Center featuring an operating suite, a playroom and a “Bear's Den” for resting.

Palm Beach Polo
Polo, an equestrian team sport that was once called the game of kings, is going to become a high school sport at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The aspiring and determined private school, Oxbridge Academy, is forecasting to design a field for a polo team in the next year as a part of its new equestrian program and will compete with other teams through the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. “No other high school in Florida can lay claim to its own polo team. And while more youth associations and clubs nationwide are fielding teams, high school polo is still a rare phenomenon.” According to the U.S. Polo Association, only two other schools in the entire nation have ensured their own polo teams. No one knows for sure what Lost City, found deep in the Everglades, was used for throughout history. Rumor has it, however, that Al Capone may have used it to produce moonshine in the 1930s.

Others claim it was used as a hideout by thirty to forty Confederate soldiers running from the Union, only to later be killed by Seminole Indians.

This enigmatic three-acre site is located about eight miles south of Alligator Alley. One thing on which experts do agree is the origins of the area. Apparently, it was a prosperous Seminole Village that was later abandoned. Exactly why it was abandoned is still unknown, causing experts to scratch their heads.
