Brian Peaper, Lost Tree Club's Director of Golf, has been named the 2013 South Florida PGA Golf Professional of the Year.

Peaper, whi played college golf at Ball State University and the University of Indiana, has been the Director of Golf at the North Palm Beach Club since 1996. While he competes in South Florida PGA senior events from time to time, Peaper has found more success off the links then on it.

“I went into the business side of golf out of college,” Peaper said, “but it was different then. There are weather issues in Indiana that don’t exist here, and youth sports meant the occasional YMCA team then. Travel teams didn’t exist.”

The Palm Beach County Golf Association’s season ending Tour Championship will take place November 16-17 at The Fox Club in Palm City.

Presented and sponsored by Jupiter Island resident Tiger Woods and his foundation, the event will feature top 30 players from the regular point standings from the 2013 season as well as the top 15 players from the senior point standings.

The Tour Championship field will be comprised following the completion of the Abacoa Golf Junior Senior event. Golfers must compete in at least three PBCGA events to be eligible for the Tour Championship.

The Tour Championship will help determine the winners of both the Bankrate Cup and the Braman Cup. The Bankrate Cup will be awarded to the end of the year…

The 2013-2014 Florida State Golf Association Winter Series will consist of seven events that runs from November through March. The series kicks off on November 25th with the Lake Mary Individual Winter Series Event and wraps up on March 4th with the Winter Garden Individual Winter Series Event.

West Palm Beach has been selected to host one of the Winter Series events when the West Palm Beach Individual Winter Series Event comes to Ironhorse Country Club.

Taking place December 9th and 10th, the event is open to male amateur golfers who are age 40 or older as of March, 2014 and are either a Regular or Foundation Member of the FSGA.

Cost of the event is $160 and entries close on November 27th.

This Saturday volunteers are needed on all Jupiter, Juno, Singer Island, and Stuart area beaches for International Coastal Cleanup 2013. The Ocean Conservancy sponsors the one-day event.  It is a part of a worldwide effort to clean up local beaches, rivers, lakes and canals.  Ocean Conservancy, the world’s largest organization focusing exclusively on the health of the marine environment, has sponsored this event for the past 27 years.

In 2012, more than 500,000 volunteers picked up 10 million pounds of trash during the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup.  For nearly three decades, this has been the largest volunteer effort to keep our ocean and waterways clean.  The cleanup volunteers together cover a distance of nearly 18,000 miles, 100 countries, and…

“Jazz on The Palm” is a fabulous waterfront concert series under the stars produced by the City of West Palm Beach. 43 golfers from around the state and country got one step closer to earning their PGA Tour cards when they advanced out of the PGA Tour’s qualifying school pre-qualifier at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach.

Rourke Van der Spuy of Columbus Georgia won the 54-hole event shooting a three round total of seven under par. He won by two shots over both Tyler McCumber of Ponte Vedra Beach and Evan Beirne of Jupiter. Both McCumber and Beirne shot in the 60s in their final round to finish the event at five under.

Other local golfers to advance included Ben Silverman and Jeff Ivall of Palm Beach Gardens, Scott Turner of Stuart, Josh Hart of Jupiter, and Tyler Kitson of West Palm Beach.

Palm Beach’s oldest, and most famous shopping and dining area has been named to the national top 20 Iconic Streets list according to 10best.com.

A division of USA Today, the site is hosting “a contest to name the American street that best combines history and a strong sense of place while reflecting its unique location in the country”.

Worth Avenue on Palm Beach was designed and built in the early 1920s by architect Addison Mizner. He built Worth Avenue shortly after designing several buildings on the street’s western end, including the Everglades Club. The Mediterranean-style buildings with small enclaves of restaurants and shops became known around the world as “the Palm Beach look”.

Starting this upcoming Saturday, the Abacoa Green Market will get started for its second season. Featuring new venders, children’s activities, and musical acts, the market will run on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm at the Abacoa Town Center.

Started last year by Abacoa resident Reggie Scurry, the market will feature vendors selling everything from nutritional supplements and locally grown produce, to wholesale seafood, baked goods, jewelry, and clothing.

Every year college football teams from around the country take the field week in and week out with the goal of making it to one of the college football postseason bowl games. For most of the players, schools, and fans, it’s a trip to a warm weather climate in the heart of winter and a reward for a successful winning season.

There is little surprise that with the warm weather that Floridian’s enjoy year round that the state currently hosts six to seven bowl games every year from Jacksonville down to Miami and everywhere in between. One of the only areas that did not host one of these games was Palm Beach County. That is about to change though, as Florida is adding one more bowl game to its schedule.

Andrew Kozan’s first love was baseball. The Palm Beach Gardens resident started on the diamond at the age of four. A year later, something happened that very well could be life changing for the 14 year old: he discovered the game of golf.

Not wanting to play a team sport anymore, the freshman at King’s Academy in West Palm Beach took up golf and has not looked back since.

“I decided I didn’t want to play a team sport like that,” Kozan said, “where you have to depend so much on everyone else’s performance. I wanted to play a game with more independence, and my mom took me out to play golf one day and I loved it.”
