PGA National is one of the main reasons that Palm Beach Gardens is famous. As a community, PGA National is a renowned 2,340-acre area made up of many different neighborhoods, but at its center lies the PGA National Resort and Members' Club. The 6 outstanding golf courses of the club are playable by members and guests staying at the resort. The reason PGA National is famous is that it hosts South Florida's only PGA TOUR event: the Cognizant Classic (previously called the Honda Classic) on the Champion course.
The resort is one of the most highly reviewed in the area, and the Members' Club is one of the most popular. As a community, PGA National is made up of 46 distinct neighborhoods. Amenities at PGA National
If you decide to become a member at the club, then there are a few different options, giving you varying levels of access to the amenities. A full membership will get you access to: all of the golf courses and practice facilities, the resort pool, the gym and exercise classes, the tennis, pickleball, and racquetball courts, croquet, social events, and more.
Other amenities vary from neighborhood to neighborhood within the community. While many of the single-family homes have pools, many neighborhoods have community pools. Some also have playgrounds or courts, or are walking distance to parks and green spaces. PGA National’s amenities include a luxurious spa, racquet club, and nineteen tennis courts with professional instruction available. PGA National homes are conveniently close to many of Palm Beach County’s A-rated schools, the Gardens Mall, Legacy Place plaza, Downtown Gardens, and PGA Commons.
PGA National Community History
First opening in 1981, PGA National hosted its first major pro tournament in 1983: the Ryder Cup. It went on to host its first Honda Classic in 2007 and has hosted it every year since. It's been called the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches since 2024. Today, PGA National has over 5,000 homes divided into 46 distinct communities. The Champion Course: Where the Pros Play
Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for major tournament play, The Champion course at PGA National Resort & Spa was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 2014 and hosts the Cognizant Classic each spring on the PGA TOUR. Although The Champion has generous landing areas, and spacious, accepting TifEagle greens, golfers are presented with course management challenges throughout the round. This course has five sets of tees to make the course more playable for golfers of all levels. A must-play on any avid golfer's list, The Champion features the Bear Trap, which spans three demanding holes, named after 'The Golden Bear' himself, legendary golfer and designer, Jack Nicklaus.
The Palmer Course: Play Boldly
Named after its designer, Arnold Palmer, this course is one of the more forgiving at PGA National. From tee to fairway, it's known for its risk/reward game. The open fairways and larger “Champion Bermuda” greens can be quite accommodating and invite players to take a chance if they dare – as golfers are not overly penalized for missing the fairway or primary rough on most holes here. There is a considerable amount of undulation through the fairway, presenting the opportunity for uneven lies and creative shot-making. The Palmer has a great series of finishing holes, with the 18th being one of the most scenic par 5s on the property.
The Fazio Course: Classic Design, Modern Play
The Fazio is a modern reinvention of PGA National’s first course, The Haig—originally built in 1980 to honor five-time PGA Champion Walter Hagen. Redesigned by Tom Fazio II, this updated layout blends timeless golf architecture with today’s best playability features, making it enjoyable for all skill levels.
Low handicappers will find a true test, especially on the demanding par-5 4th hole — one of the toughest across all 90 holes at PGA National. Meanwhile, higher handicaps can enjoy a resort-style round that’s both scenic and playable.
The Fazio remains a par-72, but has been carefully modernized to enhance both strategy and enjoyment. Key upgrades include:
- 70% larger greens (totaling 2.5 acres), now surfaced with TifEagle Bermuda
- New tee configurations supporting the PGA/USGA’s “Tee it Forward” initiative, allowing play from 3,255 to 4,187 yards
- Rebuilt bunkers and reimagined tee boxes for improved flow and challenge
- Celebration Bermuda grass on tees and fairways for lush, resilient turf
Tom Fazio II sums it up best: “It’s that ideal balance where single-digit golfers will be fully challenged, while higher handicaps can enjoy a perfect day of resort golf.”
The Estate Course: Going Off Campus
Designed by Karl Litten, The Estate course presents an enjoyable mix of challenging and docile holes. The course sets up for any level of player as it is one of the shorter courses at PGA National, but where golfers are tested is in the formidable placement of fairway bunkers and water hazards. Generous fairways at this course will often make stray tee shots more manageable, and the greens help keep the course fun for the high handicapper. Forced carries to many of the greens over hazards or bunkers create a test that makes each round more enjoyable than the last. With an open feeling created by the property-wide housing setbacks, the course seems almost like a core golf course. The Estates course is located five miles west of the main resort.
The Match Course: Strategy Meets Style
A fascinating and unique idea, The Match Course at PGA National is a fresh addition to the club/resort.
The Match at PGA National is unlike any other golf course — a bold, modern take on classic design that brings out the competitive spirit in every player. Inspired by golden age architects like Seth Raynor, C.B. MacDonald, and Donald Ross, The Match reimagines iconic “Template” holes with a fresh twist on gameplay and strategy.
This course is designed for match play of all kinds — best ball, skins, foursomes, or your own custom format. The catch? The winner (or loser, your call) of each hole picks the tee box for the next, adding a fun, unpredictable layer of strategy to every round.
Fast, Fun, and Ground-Game Friendly
The entire course is mowed at fairway height, encouraging creative ground play and imaginative shot-making. Around the greens, you'll find expansive chipping areas and multiple options for approach—ideal for players who love to shape shots and think strategically.
With fewer than 20 natural, rough-edged bunkers and minimal forced carries, The Match is as accessible as it is exciting. And thanks to its "pick-up if you're out" rule, rounds move quickly—often under 3 hours—without sacrificing the fun.
The Staple Course: A Fun, Fast Par-3 Experience
Dubbed “The Fun Little Nine,” The Staple at PGA National is a unique 9-hole par-3 course designed by golf visionary Andy Staples. Built from two holes of the old Squire course, The Staple is short, social, and endlessly entertaining — with hole distances ranging from 60 to 130 yards.
With creative green complexes, slopes that funnel shots, and even tees set in bunkers, this course is anything but ordinary. As Golf.com puts it: “From tees in bunkers to putting ramps, PGA National’s new par-3 course is a different kind of test.”
Designed for casual play, The Staple encourages fun group rounds, twilight matches, and even putting-only challenges — no long irons required. Its unique figure-8 routing invites friendly interaction, especially around the fire pits and outdoor lounge areas between holes 2–3 and 7–8.
Reimagining The Squire: A New Vision by Andy Staples
Originally the Squire Course, PGA National partnered with Andy Staples to completely reimagine the layout — splitting it into The Staple (9-hole short course) and The Match (18-hole strategy course).
Staples focused on three modern golf trends:
- Faster rounds
- More fun
- Classic design principles
The course was rebuilt with expanded fairways, minimal hazards, and strategic tee placements for all skill levels. Greens were enlarged and re-grassed with TifEagle Bermuda for better drainage and consistency, while fairways and tees use Celebration Bermuda.
To enhance aesthetics and sustainability, natural landscaping and coquina-style cart paths blend seamlessly into the environment, offering visual interest and reduced maintenance.
Croquet
When you’re not hitting the fairways on one of the five legendary courses, you can always swing by the PGA greens for croquet. Reserve a private lesson on one of our five USCA tournament-certified lawns (brief instruction is included with your court fee). Crisp whites are required of all players, and resort guests are welcome to observe weekly club games and the Peyton Ballenger Invitational each spring.
Tennis & Pickleball
The Club at PGA National has 18 tennis courts, 11 of which are lighted for nighttime play. As pickleball has taken South Florida, and the rest of the country, by storm, PGA National has also put in six pickleball courts. As more people take up the game, more courts will likely be added or converted. There are also lessons for those who have yet to really get into the sport.

PGA National Park
PGA National Park is not a part of the resort/club. Its main access is from PGA Boulevard just outside the gates, but there is also a side entrance, within the gates of PGA National. PGA National Park is a public park of Palm Beach Gardens and has 2 basketball courts with 10' rims, a basketball court with 9' rims, 2 tennis courts, 2 adult softball fields, 3 multipurpose fields, 2 pavilions, a playground, and a disc golf course.
