The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge just grew by about 4 acres.

Four contiguous beachfront lots on Jupiter Island’s North Beach Road were donated by the Coast Guard, increasing the federally protected sea turtle nesting habitat.

The beach is one of the most productive sea turtle nesting habitats in the U.S., the refuge's website says.

The now 1,095-acre sanctuary’s natural habitat — sand pine scrub, mangrove forests and miles of coastal dunes — supports about 40 plant and animal species listed as endangered, threatened or of special concern.

To expand the refuge, the U.S. House Tuesday passed the Jupiter Island Land Transfer Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Mast.

Just in time for alligator hunting season, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is offering two free courses required for Florida hunters.

On September 22nd and 23rd at the FWC regional office in West Palm Beach, people interested in hunting can attend the traditional, hands-on Hunter Education Course required along with a license to hunt in Florida and beyond. The 2-day course satisfies the legal requirements in all U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Firearms, ammunition and other materials will be provided but students should bring a pen and paper. The FWC will also be holding a Bowhunting Course for those interested, on September 15th at the same location. For this course you must bring your own bow and arrows.
