The Florida Keys is now open to visitors starting today, June 1st.  The chain of Florida islands closed more than two months ago to minimize the spread of coronavirus and is now reopen for vacationers and visitors.

Monroe County Emergency Management had previously announced that checkpoints stopped visitors from entering the Florida Keys. During the closure, more than 18,750 cars were turned away because drivers did not provide the proper paperwork that showed they lived or worked in the Florida Keys. The announcement last month stated that hotels and other lodging establishments will be allowed to reopen at 50% capacity beginning today as well.

Starting today, shoppers across the state of Florida can avoid sales tax on certain items in preparation with the start of hurricane season. Hurricane season in Florida starts on June 1st and goes through November 30th. For a short few day you can avoid paying sales tax by putting together and gathering your preparation stockpiles to be prepared in case of a storm.

The seven-day sales tax holiday starts today, Friday May 29th and goes until Thursday, June 4th. During this time, shoppers can avoid paying sales tax on these items.

  • Reusable ice packs ($10 dollars or less)
  • Flashlights and Lanterns ($20 dollars or less)
  • Gasoline and Diesel fuel containers ($25 dollars or less)
  • Coolers ($30 dollars or less)
  • Batteries ($30 dollars or less)

Things are starting to get back to normal at The Gardens Mall. The two-story mall located in Palm Beach Gardens reopened Friday, May 15th for shoppers after being closed for nearly two months.

The Gardens Mall joins Boca Raton’s Town Center Mall and The Mall at Wellington Green which opened earlier this month and the Palm Beach Outlets among the list of major retailers to reopen in Palm Beach County.  

All mall employees will wear masks and every day when before their shift begins will have their temperature checked. Theme parks across the state of Florida have been shut down for months and yesterday, officials from two theme parks met with the Orange County officials to discuss plans for reopening.  Walt Disney World and SeaWorld Orlando are planning to open in the upcoming weeks.

Walt Disney World presented its plans and several new safety measures for park goers and cast members. Disney is requiring that cast members and guests have their temperatures check at the park entrances and wear a mask. Disney is also allowing visitors to make an advanced reservation for park entry to keep the numbers down. There will be no parades, fireworks or any activity that creates a large crowd at Disney World for a while.

Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor the men and women who died while serving in the US Military. The day was originally known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War in the mid-1860’s. It wasn’t until 1971 when Memorial Day became an official federal holiday.

Florida restaurants are now able to serve more people for dine in services. The State of Florida was entered into its Full Phase One of reopening Monday, May 18th. Restaurants and dine in services have been closed or take out and delivery only since the middle of March.

Restaurants and dining establishments are now allowed to be operating at 50% capacity instead of the 25% capacity last week. Those who choose to eat out at a restaurant are still encouraged to follow the CDC guidelines for social distancing and tables must remain at least 6 feet apart from each other.

Many South Florida’s popular attractions are being to reopen to the public in the upcoming days, one of them being the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium which is set to reopen next week after months of being closed.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is opening this weekend, just in time for Memorial Day. Memorial Day is this upcoming Monday, May 25th.

The Science Center and Aquarium will open their doors Friday, May 22nd, 23rd and 24th for members only and the all guests are welcomed starting Monday, May 25th. Existing members of the Science Center will receive a 3-month extension on their membership to make up for lost time.

Yesterday, golf returned in Florida for the TaylorMade Driving Relief Charity match that was held at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach. Palm Beach County residents and professional golfers Matthew Wolff and Rickie Fowler competed against Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson in a team’s skins game with a $3 million dollar prize to be donated to coronavirus relief.

The match began at 2 pm yesterday and McIlroy and Johnson played for the American Nurses Foundation and Fowler and Wolff played for the CDC Foundation. The final results gave the American Nurses Foundation $1.85 million dollars from the McIlroy and Johnson team and $1.15 million dollars to the CDC Foundation from the Fowler and Wolff team.

Good news for Floridians, Governor DeSantis announced last week that the entire state of Florida will begin to enter the full Phase One of reopening the state and its economy, getting one step closer at getting life back to normal.

As more things begin to open in Florida, you are still asked to follow the CDC guidelines for social distancing and wear a face mask to keep the spread of COVID-19 numbers down.

For the past several weeks, the popular Florida based grocery store adjusted their hours and reserved shopping hours for seniors only during the pandemic. With the Covid-19 numbers continuing to go down in Florida, Publix will now be opening during their normal hours of operation beginning tomorrow, Saturday, May 16th. 

In a press release, Publix announced that shopping will resume normal hours from 7 am to 9 pm and that Publix pharmacies will be returning to their normal hours as well. 

The company also thanked everyone for their support over the past few weeks and understand that some customers will still like to shop when the stores are less crowded and encourage them to shop in the first hour of the day.
