Did you know that manatees are Florida’s marine mammal, and we proudly go to great lengths to protect them? Manatees are large, marine herbivoros known as sea cows.

The preservation of this endangered marine mammal is crucial, and it starts with community awareness. Throughout the colder months, manatees are drawn to warm-water outflows. They can’t survive in water that is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Here in Palm Beach County, visit the Manatee Lagoon facility located at Florida Power and Light, 6000 North Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach. The 2019 Manatee Lagoon Festival is back again this weekend. The ManateeFest kicks off tomorrow Friday, February 1st with a Movie Night Kickoff.

The movie for the kickoff is “Finding Nemo” starting at 5 pm. Bring your chairs and blankets for the movie under the stars to kick off the fun event. Food and drink vendors will be on site during the movie night.

This Saturday, February 2nd is the ManateeFest starting at 9 am to 4 pm. The festival and the Manatee Lagoon are in their third year and is a free event for the whole family. The day will feature photo opportunities with Mia the Manatee, an interactive selfie station, marine life face painting, coloring stations, passport activity, and chances to win prizes. The Manatee Lagoon is the perfect place to bring your kids or friends to beat the heat this summer in Florida! The Manatee Lagoon is an FPL Discovery Center that overlooks the warm Intracoastal Waters of the Palm Beach Inlet. The lagoon fills up with manatees year round but especially during the winter months when the warm water runs off of the Florida Power and Light Company’s Next Generation Clean Energy Center. During the cooler months, this clean energy initiative production.
