The iconic Palm Beach mansion and museum is one of the most famous landmarks and homes on Palm Beach Island. The Flagler Museum, or formally known as Whitehall, is a grand elegant estate that features more than 100,000 square feet filled with some of the most important Palm Beach history.

The home was commission by the American Industrialist Henry Flagler as a wedding gift to his wife Mary. Flagler, the founder of Standard Oil commissioned John Carrere and Thomas Hastings to build and design the grand estate. Hastings and Carrere were also the architects for other famous landmarks such as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City and the New York Public Library during the Gilded Age.

The DuBois Pioneer Home located in Dubois Park in Jupiter is one of the last remaining historic homesteads of its type in northern Palm Beach County. The historic Jupiter landmark closed in 2008 and underwent extensive renovations and is opened to the public for tours to learn about Jupiter’s history and the DuBois family. 

The home was built in 1898 by Harry DuBois, the son of Harry and Susan DuBois and Charlie Carlin, the oldest son of Captain Charles Carlin of the Jupiter Inlet Lifesaving Station. The home belonged to South Florida pioneers Harry and Susan DuBois and is a perfect example of the self-sufficient South Florida homestead with both archeological and historic value.

The Stuart Heritage Museum is a great place to go to learn about local South Florida history. The museum gives you a real sense of what things were like in the area’s past from living to working and everything in-between.

The museum was created in 1988 when the City of Stuart purchased the Stuart Feed Store building on Flagler Avenue in downtown Stuart, Florida. The purpose of Stuart Heritage is to help preserve the heritage, artifacts and history of Stuart and its surrounding communities. If you’ve taken a ride down the Palm Beach Lake Trail, you may have seen a charming little house with striped awnings and shingle clad sliding overlooking the Intracoastal.

Now known as Sea Gull Cottage, this is the oldest original residence found in Palm Beach.

Built by railroad developer R. R. McCormick in 1886, then known as McCormick’s cottage boasted sparkling stained glass, a magnificent mahogany staircase constructed from lumber salvaged from a local shipwreck, Georgian marble entryway floors, and a commanding third-story tower. Ralph H Norton and his wife Elizabeth founded The Norton Museum of Art in 1941. Ralph Norton was an industrialist in Chicago who headed the Acme Steel Company. The museum came about because him and his wife used to collect items and art to decorate their home.

The couple began spending more time in Palm Beach County when they were semi-retired in 1935. Not knowing what to do with their giant art collection, the two decided to create their own museum in West Palm Beach. Construction first began on the Norton Gallery and the School of Art in 1940 and opened a year later to the public in February of 1941.

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum is a fun and informative place for residents of Jupiter and Palm Beach County as a whole, to learn about their regional history. The Museum also encompasses the Tindall Pioneer Homestead, the earliest house still existing in Jupiter.

Tindall Pioneer Homestead

Originally located a mile up the Loxahatchee River next to the early Pennock Plantation on the south side of the river, the 1892 Tindall Pioneer Homestead was home to George Washington Tindall and Mary Pilcher Tindall and eight of their ten children. The house gives a glimpse of early life along the Loxahatchee for brave pioneering families.

Tomorrow night, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is hosting their reoccurring and popular Lighthouse Sunset Tour event. Climb to the top of the iconic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and see the incredible sunset over the water and Jupiter.

During the tour, visitors will also get a look into the Lighthouse Watch room and watch the light turn on for the night and illuminate the sky. The tour last approximately 75 minutes long and the tours are weather permitting.

Children must be 48 inches tall to climb the lighthouse tower steps and must be accompanied by an adult 18 years old or older.
