Some people are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. Here’s what to do if you think you may have been exposed to coronavirus.

Watch for symptoms

People with COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms — ranging from mild to severe. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.

Use the CDC’s self-checker to help make decisions and seek appropriate medical care regarding COVID-19.

You may have COVID-19 if you have these symptoms or combinations of symptoms:

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Or at least two of these symptoms:

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Repeated shaking with chills

  • Muscle pain

  • Headache

Things are looking up across the state of Florida as gym, restaurants, and retail stores are now open (with restrictions) and many are returning to work. If you are young and healthy, the risks you face with the coronavirus are minor compared to other groups. Those who fall into the “high risk” category should continue to strictly follow CDC guidelines. Here are some of the things high-risk groups need to know about the coronavirus.

Based on what we know now, those at high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are:

  • People 65 years and older
  • People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility

People of all ages with underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, including:

  • People with chronic lung…

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made his decision to begin reopening the state based on the steadily decreasing number of coronavirus cases throughout the state as well as our local medical systems gearing up to prepare themselves for any potential influx in cases.

The governor has cited hospital bed availability as a key indicator that the state is ready to open up again. About 33% of the state’s 59,000 hospital beds are available.

Even more — 37% — of Palm Beach County’s roughly 4,000 beds are free. About 31% of adult intensive care beds in the county and statewide are not filled.

While we can all finally see light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel, it still may be several weeks before gyms open back up in South Florida and around the country. Staying in shape is still both possible and important. Many people have adapted their fitness routines during this time to feature more cardio and less weightlifting. Generally, this is a good strategy. The problem, however, may be motivation. If you are bored with cardio and are starting to lack the motivation to exercise, here are a few things you can do to relight your fire until finally open back up.

Set New Goals

With our lives upended, many of our pre-coronavirus fitness goals no longer make sense. If that’s your situation, select a new goal that accounts for your…

Yesterday, Gov. Ron DeSantis touted the low number of new coronavirus cases reported overnight, highlighting a drop in new infections in counties where businesses were allowed to partially reopen.

DeSantis said the daily report from the Florida Department of Health disputed the idea that areas, where restrictions have been eased, will see large increases in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19.

While he promised to closely monitor the continuing march of the disease, of the 386 new COVID-19 cases reported Monday only 183 were in the 64 counties where restaurants and retail shops were allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity seven days ago.

“It’s been a pretty consistent theme throughout this, from the very beginning,” he said,…

Because Coronavirus can be spread easily, countless Palm Beach County residents have resorted to wearing face masks to protect themselves.  The virus is transmissible through human contact and exposure to respiratory droplets from an infected person.  When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they force out respiratory droplets into the air. They can also spread those droplets around if they touch their eyes and nose then touch another person or surface. Meet these infectious drops and you could get sick.

There is data that face masks can slow the spread of airborne viruses. For example, one study from 2008 found that those who used a mask were 80% less likely to get the flu. Additionally, a 2009 report observed that wearing face masks and…

Now more than ever, cleaning and disinfectant products are flying off the shelves at local grocery stores and mostly sold out everywhere online. Germs live everywhere and can be easily be spread through the air or on surfaces so its important to disinfect and kill the germs.

There are different types of germs, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. Bacteria are one-celled organisms found throughout nature that can help you through vaccines and medicine or can hurt you such as strep throat.  Fungi are multi-celled organisms that like to live in damp and warm environments. Viruses cannot live on their own and need a host to survive and can cause the common cold.  Protozoa are also one-celled organisms that love the water and can cause infections.

Florida has reported only 37,439 positive coronavirus cases, ranking it eighth in the U.S. for the number of confirmed cases despite being the nation’s third most populated state.

The case and death numbers point to something many may find surprising: Florida has not become as much of a hot spot as other states such as New York, California, and Michigan.

The state has fewer cases per capita than other heavily impacted states, such as Louisiana. According to Johns Hopkins University, Florida has had a total of 176 cases per 100,000 people compared to Louisiana, which has had 644 per 100,000 people.

Most of the Sunshine State entered its first phase of reopening on Monday, with restaurants, retail stores and museums allowed to operate at no…
