Scripps Research Institute’s Florida Campus in Jupiter received a philanthropic gift from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust to provide science education training opportunities for local elementary, middle, and high school students.  The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust will invest in the institute’s educational programs with a commitment of $1.8 million. 

The Kenan Charitable Trust endorsed these programs as part of its mission to support educational opportunity to the benefit of humanity. Niedland Documentary Scholarship Award, for the annual Student Showcase of Films produced by the Palm Beach Film and Television Commission every year.

Students in High School and College participating must create original video content to capture their film and storytelling skills. The Town of Jupiter has a rich historic timeline filled with stories. Tales of the area ranging from the ancient Indians, Tequesta Tribe, that lived here until the European discovery of the area by Ponce de Leon. The Seminole Indian War battles fought here.  Jupiter’s earliest known records date as far back as 1565.  After early settlers set up homesteads, the waterways were a huge source of transportation, as well as the new Flagler Railroad.

School is back in session for students in the Palm Beach County School District. Students go back to school today, Monday, August 31st.

The start of the new school year looks a little different compared to previous years. The school district announced in late July that the school district was going completely virtual for the start of the new 2020/2021 school year.

In effort to help the students, teachers, parents, and guardians adjust to virtual learning, the school district set up several hotlines and online resources for students and teachers to use.

The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival’s annual Shakespeare By The Sea has been an annual festival in the Palm Beaches for more than 29 years. This year, the festival is still going on, but it will be a little different. The festival will be going virtual in 2020.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the festival and to celebrate 30 years, the production this year will be “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.  The festival is currently going on now starting Friday, August 21st through Labor Day weekend, the first weekend in September. The festival is free, and the performances are available to watch and stream through the theater company’s website.

With Palm Beach County School District starting classes on Monday, August 31st, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach has created a new program to help students and parents with virtual learning.  Every week, the sea turtle research and rehabilitation center will be hosting their Coastal Classroom.

The Coastal Classroom is a weekly event that will begin Monday, August 31st. The purpose of the Coastal Classroom is to help students, parents, and teachers with the remote virtual learning. Students are invited to complete their virtual schoolwork at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The Coastal Classroom is a safe in-person virtual learning space for students.

The Martin County School District Board has voted to stay with their original school calendar for the upcoming school year.  Some school board members wanted to push back the start of the school year to August 25th but negotiations with the teacher’s union and the Martin County Education Association were not successful.

Students in Martin County School District will be heading to the classroom for in-person learning on Tuesday, August 11th. Teachers are scheduled to head back to the classroom on Monday, August 3rd.

Palm Beach County School District have been weighing all the options when it comes to going back to school and what it would look like in the fall.

Summer vacation just started but students are due back in the class on August 10th, but a lot of questions and concerns remain about what the schools and classrooms will look like amid the pandemic.

The school board met Wednesday, June 10th to begin discussing plans for the new 2020-2021 school year and they are weighing three possible scenarios.

Scenarios include:

  • Students resuming in-person instruction full time
  • Full-time distance learning
  • Hybrid Learning where students come in two days a week and continue distance learning three days a week

Good news for college students in Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Atlantic University is planning on bringing staff, faculty, and students back to campus in August. The big questions going around for college students is whether they will resume in-person classes this fall semester.

Palm Beach Atlantic University announced on Thursday, May 28th from their West Palm Beach campus that they intend to bring students, staff, and faculty back to campus to resume classes in August.
