June 8, 2021 is World Ocean Day. Fortunately, here in Palm Beach County there are several organizations that help by keeping the ocean free of garbage left on our beaches with beach cleanups.  This little piggy keeps the beaches clean.  The United Nations day, World Ocean Day, is for celebrating the role of the oceans in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect the ocean and sustainably use marine resources. 

Many countries have celebrated this special day since 1992, following the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro. In 2008, the UN General Assembly decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Ocean Day”.

Fasten your walking shoes, come explore a recently designated outstanding natural area in Jupiter.  Join the River Center on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 for a nature walk through the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. Take a walk on the guided trails and immerse yourself in this local natural area. Explore a paved path within this natural area with uneven terrain.

Cities in South Florida, and elsewhere, are growing at a rapid pace. Making cities green is a necessary step in preparing for a healthier, more sustainable future. The Earth Day Network is using today, April 22, 2020, Earth Day as a platform to educate residents of Planet Earth.

These endeavors focus on advancing science and advocating action and volunteerism on behalf of the global environment. Environmental education is key to continued growth and success. Some of the “green” initiatives to be considered are listed below.

Did you know that manatees are Florida’s marine mammal, and we proudly go to great lengths to protect them? Manatees are large, marine herbivoros known as sea cows.

The preservation of this endangered marine mammal is crucial, and it starts with community awareness. Throughout the colder months, manatees are drawn to warm-water outflows. They can’t survive in water that is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Here in Palm Beach County, visit the Manatee Lagoon facility located at Florida Power and Light, 6000 North Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach. Loggerhead turtles are named for their large heads that support powerful jaw muscles, allowing them to crush hard-shelled prey like clams and sea urchins. They are less likely to be hunted for their meat or shell compared to other sea turtles. The accidental capture of marine animals in fishing gear, is a serious problem for loggerhead turtles, which are endangered, because they frequently come in contact with fisheries.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center(LMC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit education and ocean conservation facility located on the Atlantic Ocean in Juno Beach and is one of the most treasured organizations in Florida. The facility focuses on sea turtle rehabilitation and houses a variety of exhibits including live sea turtles and other coastal creatures. Exhibits include a massive prehistoric Archelon sea turtle replica, salt water aquaria and displays of local wildlife, as well as educational displays about South Florida’s marine environment.

The Responsible Pier Initiative is a Florida program designed to promote a healthy pier environment for sea turtles and other marine life with the cooperation of fisherman. The three components of the Responsible Pier Initiative include providing first responders with necessary training and resources to effectively respond to sea turtle injuries and strandings, installation of educational signage on fishing piers, and underwater cleaning beneath piers and surrounding areas on a regular basis.
