U.S. Department of Homeland Security and United States Coast Guard Auxiliary recommend that all boaters, including personal watercraft and paddle sport users take advantage of local, free Vessel Safety Checks every year.

A certified Vessel Examiner performs the courtesy vessel safety check at your boat.  The exam usually takes 30 – 45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. Boats that pass the examination are issued a VSC decal that signals Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies that your boat is in full compliance with all the State and Federal guidelines for boating.  Often, law enforcement will not detain or board your boat if your boat displays a current-year…

With Florida’s mini spiny lobster season well under way (July 24 & 25) divers hit the water.  The two-day mini spiny lobster season is one of the state’s most popular recreational events each year. Back in the early 1960’s, cattlemen would drive herds down Indiantown Road from Pratt & Whitney towards the Burt Reynolds Ranch in Jupiter Farms.  Florida had an outbreak of “fever ticks” that was deadly to cattle.  Florida’s cattlemen began to lose cattle and their means to make a living.

The southern fever tick epidemic was introduced to Florida from Texas cattle and nearly cost the cattle industry $10,000,000. The USDA implemented a mandatory cattle-dipping program.  This was a period of “open range”, meaning no fence laws and the cattle roamed freely.

Florida, Power & Light will be replacing feeder lines, cables that provide electricity to local barrier islands, as needed. FPL plans on replacing one cable per year.  Substituting cables will cost from $1 million to $3 million each. By replacing the cables, it enables them to deliver power as well as reroute power around trouble spots to strengthen the system…
