A violin, believed to have been played on the Titanic as it sank, was auctioned for more $1.6 million this past weekend.  The sea-corroded instrument is believed to have been belonged to bandmaster Wallace Hartley.  He was one of the disasters 1,500 victims.

As seen in the blockbuster film, “Titantic”, the band continued playing “Nearer, My God, to Thee” as passengers panic and the ship sinks into the icy waters.  The violin, with the inscription “For WALLACE on the occasion of our ENGAGEMENT from MARIA”, was believed to be strapped to the musician’s body in a leather case.

The violin was returned to Hartley’s fiancée, Maria Robinson, in England in 1939.  After her death, it was donated to the Salvation Army Band and later passed on, eventually settling…

Many locals have been asking the question “why do we need a parking garage in charming Jupiter Inlet Village?”  The answer comes from Jupiter’s Town Council.  Several years ago, the Town Council put into place planning policies that would support a development pattern for our funky fishing village.  The idea was to fill the quaint area with limited height buildings, no taller than 3.5 stories. Additionally, the idea was to maintain the smaller, narrower streets with on street parking with different architectural designs for a variety of businesses and residential units keeping the “funky feel”.

When the Town Council met with the Community Redevelopment Agency, an important consideration was to minimize the potential…

As anyone who lives in Palm Beach County knows, our beloved sea turtles are actively protected.  Raising awareness during nesting season is crucial to their survival.  The sea turtles recently received a tremendous amount of exposure this nesting season thanks to a series of events known as “Art Arribada”.

An “arribada” is a large aggregation of sea turtles coming ashore together to nest at the same time and the same place. The Gardens Mall, Palm Beach Gardens, and PNC Bank collaborated with Loggerhead Marine Life Center, Juno Beach, to raise funds for the center and important environmental programs. On display were fiberglass sea turtle sculptures, each created by students of participating high schools in Palm Beach County.  They were to transform the…

Harvest festivals are traditionally held on or near the Sunday of the Harvest Moon.  This full moon occurs closest to the autumn equinox (about September 23). In two years out of three, the Harvest moon comes in September, but in some years in occurs in October.   The word harvest is from the Old English word “haerfest”, meaning autumn.  It came to refer to the season for reaping and gathering grain and other grown products.

Here in the Jupiter/Tequesta area during harvest season the Town of Jupiter organizes Harvest Fest.  This year it is on Saturday, October 5, 2013 and is located under the Indiantown Road Bridge at US 1 at the Riverwalk Events Plaza from 1:00pm – 6:00pm.  Fun for the entire family! …

There are five different species of turtles that visit Florida’s beaches: loggerhead, green turtle, leatherback, hawksbill, and Kemp’s ridley.   Here on the Stuart, Jupiter/Juno and Singer Island area beaches we are fortunate to observe loggerhead, green turtle and leatherback turtle nesting sites.  A sea turtle’s life is challenging from the start.   It takes decades to reach maturity.  After mating at sea, the female returns to land.  She will make one to eight nests per season.  The nesting female will haul herself up onto the beach, generally at night, find suitable sand, and using her hind flippers dig a circular hole 16 to 20 inches deep.  She will lay soft-shelled eggs one by one until she has deposited all of her eggs (between 50 – 200 eggs…

It is supposed to be the time we break out the sweaters and the apple cider! Fall is here, changing of the leaves, football season, and holidays are just around the corner.  It is evident by the crisp change in the air, and the vibrant colors around.  Fall is a very comforting season.

Living in this Jupiter/Tequesta paradise, one must trade splendor of the fall foliage for the beauty of the tropics.

Seasonal decorating is one way to embrace autumn.

Potted plants of yellow or orange mums on the front/ back porches and pool areas will add to the seasonal flavor.

Aromatherapy is another method that influences your senses.  Purchase candles or warming oils in comforting scents like pumpkin or apple spice to fill the…

Only 80 days until the Palm Beach Food and Wine Fest 2013. Local “foodies” are preparing their taste buds for the culinary delights.  If you happen to be a beer geek here is some “hoppy” news for you – Tequesta Brewing Co. (TBC) 287 U.S. Highway One, Tequesta, FL (561)745-5000, is celebrating Hop Week starting today! Once a year hops are harvested in the North West and sold throughout the year for beer manufacturing.

This means a week’s worth of freshly infused hops in TBC beer.  The difference is that these featured brews are not made with the usual processed hops, but with freshly harvested hops. When the hops are not dried, they maintain the volatile, perfumy and grassy aromas not found after they have been processed.  The brewery ordered more than 100…
