The home-improvement shows you see on TV make it look so easy. Buy a fixer- upper of a house with "good bones," and presto change-o, turn it into your dream home.

The reality, however, is that buying a fixer-upper is some serious work. One option is to hire someone to do the work, which is the way to go if you do not have the right experience for the job. However, it can be expensive, because you have to pay for labor. In addition, you cannot just check out and let the pro handle everything, because there may be a number of mistakes and miscommunications during a renovation.

Another option is to do the work yourself. You can save money on the labor, but the work will take significantly longer than a professional will. Too many homeowners think they are the…

June 6, 1944 was the day Western Allied forces landed in Normandy, France.  Just after midnight, the Allied assault upon Hitler’s European stronghold began.  The operation caught the Nazi high command off guard.  Low tides and very bad weather convinced them that an attack was unlikely.

Airborne infantry made the initial attack, more than 1,000 British bombers pummeled Normandy’s coastline.   The first confirmation of a large-scale attack did not arrive until 2:15 a.m. and news an invasion was in progress was not confirmed until 4:15 a.m.,  it was not until almost sunrise at 6:00 a.m. , when any doubt was removed, when the horizon was covered by an unbroken line of Allied warships.

More than 160,000 Allied troops landed along the 50-mile stretch…

New restaurant plans would be the latest in the area, with public boat slips, on the waterway near the Jupiter Inlet.

Demolishing, not renovating, is the latest plan for the now-vacant Brix Italian Fishery off U.S. 1, south of Jupiter Island, according to plans submitted to the Town Council of Jupiter.

The Town Council of Jupiter, last fall gave unanimous approval, for the owners to remodel the building. The plan includes outdoor seating and a public dock with nine boat slips on the Loxahatchee River, according to the plan submitted by Bjarne Borg, co-founder of the Stockholm-based Index Investment Co. that owns the property.

The original plan called for 350 seats and a 23-seat outdoor cabana bar with valet parking. This would also be North American…

The proposal for the gated community, Lakewood, went before the Town Council last night for an initial vote.  The original Lakewood plans had been streamlined down again.  Originally brought before the council with 286 houses in January it has been reduced to 275 residential units with a restaurant, pharmacy and 150,000 square feet designated for a future biotech research space.

The conveniently located and attractive gated community would be on 260 vacant acres at the northeast corner of Indiantown Road and Florida’s Turnpike.  The land, known as Parcel 19, is one of the town’s largest undeveloped parcels.

Originally, developer Otto “Buz” Divosta proposed a plan that included 350 single-family homes and a 20-pump gas station.  Following…

Everyone wants to be outside sunbathing, swimming, playing on the beach / pool, or just barbequing in the backyard.  While summer means fun in the sun, make sure you are not getting too much of a good thing.  Avoid consequences of overexposure to the sun like sunburns, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling, and skin cancer, including melanoma, by practicing proper skin protection.

The hours between 10a.m. and 4p.m. daylight savings time and (9a.m. and 3p.m. standard time) are the most hazardous for ultraviolet exposure in the continental United States.
