The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens consist of the former residence of sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905 -1982), the widow of Ralph Hubbard Norton. The freedom of African Americans from slavery in the United States in 1865 is celebrated on the holiday known as “Juneteenth” on June 19. Juneteenth is made up of the words ‘June’ and ‘nineteenth,’ and it is on this day that Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas more than 156 years ago to inform slaves that slavery had been abolished.

June 19, 2021, is the 156 year of the abolishment of slavery and finally signed on as a federal holiday.  This comes after President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth National Independence Day Act Thursday, saying he believes it will go down as one of the greatest honors he has as president.  This enactment will undeniably bring additional awareness and will help educate people about history.

Father’s Day is just around the corner and The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens is offering a special gift with purchase through June 20, 2021. Father’s Day began in 1910, two years after the first official celebration of Mother’s Day in the U.S.

The holiday began thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who had been raised with her siblings by her widower father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. She was so inspired by how her father rose to the challenge of parenting alone, she petitioned for a special day to recognize dads as well as moms.
