If you’ve taken a ride down the Palm Beach Lake Trail, you may have seen a charming little house with striped awnings and shingle clad sliding overlooking the Intracoastal.

Now known as Sea Gull Cottage, this is the oldest original residence found in Palm Beach.

Built by railroad developer R. R. McCormick in 1886, then known as McCormick’s cottage boasted sparkling stained glass, a magnificent mahogany staircase constructed from lumber salvaged from a local shipwreck, Georgian marble entryway floors, and a commanding third-story tower. After seeing photographs of McCormick’s gorgeous home in 1893, Henry Flagler purchased the lake-to-ocean property and home for $75,000. The towering age-old coconut palms on the island create a nice shady path (particularly in the morning) for riders to get a glimpse of exclusive high-end backyards of impressive estates. Florida National Scenic Trail, or simply the "Florida Trail," runs through 1,300 miles ranging from the Big Cypress Preserve to the Gulf Islands. It's one of Florida's largest protected natural areas.

If you love hiking and live in South Florida, you’ve got to check out the Florida Trail especially now that it’s added a new section Cimarron, which extends west of State Road 85 in Crestview. This new path is 8.9 miles and dead-ends at the Yellow River. If you’re into wading through shallow waters, bushwhacking your way through trees and relaxing in a hammock at the end of it all, this is a trip for you.

The Florida Trail is a great way to experience South Florida’s ecosystem in all its glory. Kids will love it, and so will you!
