While the U.S. Open doesn’t tee off until next Thursday, the USGA has given golf fans a small preview of what they can expect six days from now at Merion Golf Club.
Pairings and tee times are not expected to be announced until this weekend, but golf’s governing body has leaked what is sure to be the premier pairing of the event. The all-star pairing will feature the number one and number two golfers in the world in Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy.
Woods has gotten off to one of the best starts to a season in his career. The Jupiter Island resident goes into the U.S. Open with four wins already including a win at The Players Championship, a tournament he had not won since 2001. While Woods struggled last week at the Memorial, the U.S. Open course sets up well for Tiger to get his 15 major, his first since the 2008 U.S. Open.
While Mcllroy is still looking for his first win of the season, the Palm Beach Gardens resident has been playing much better golf as of late. After missing the cut in Abu Dabi and withdrawing from the Honda Classic after one and a half poor rounds, Mcllroy has settled in nicely. He has finished in the top 10 in four of his next seven events state-side and recorded a 25 place finish at the Masters.
Joining Woods and Mcllroy in the star-studded pairing will be world number three and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott. Scott’s caddie, Steve Williams, caddied for Tiger from 1999 until 2011 and was on the bag for all but one of Tiger’s 15 major championships.
This year marks the third straight year that the top three players in the rankings are in the same group. It will also be the first time that Woods and Mcllroy are paired together in any round of a major. The three major winners will tee off at 1:14pm on Thursday and 7:44am Friday.
