Last month, the Town of Jupiter Council passed a resolution that supportsĀ the voluntary elimination of single-use plastic straws and overall reduction of single-use plastics. The campaign is called "PURE" which stands for "Plastics Use Reduction Encouragement," which doesn't outlaw straws and single-use plastics but prompts the community to get involved in the effort to decrease plastic pollution.Ā Ā

Jupiter prides itself in its incredible blue water- when the tide comes in the inlet it is an extravagant sparkling turquoise that will make you want to stop what you're doing and jump in. The area also has an abundance of marine life- it's one of the most popular places to scuba dive in the state- and our beaches are important nesting sites for sea turtles, particularly the endangered Loggerhead.

Plastics have infiltrated our oceans, our marine habitats and animals, and our food chain. Each year 8.8 million tons of plastic flows into the ocean and that number is increasing rapdily as time goes on. If we continue at this rate, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish within the next thirty years.

Plastic straws and other single-use plastics are very wasteful and most are non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. This is why the town of Jupiter has decided to take action and pass resolution 63-18, to encourage local businesses to discontinue their use of small plastic items, and to encourage the community to make conscious decisions rejecting the use of them.

The U.S. uses 500 million straws every single day. If everyone in Florida rejected using straws for just one week, we could reduce this number by 2.4 million. It takes a group effort to fix the plastic problem we are facing, and it starts with small changes. This is why Jupiter hopes that by their example, others will participate in saying "no" to single-use plastics.Ā By encouraging businesses and the entire Jupiter community to eliminate or reduce their use of plastic straws, together we can all do the right thing and protect our oceans, waterways, natural areas and wildlife.

So ditch the plastic and swap to reusable. Share your changes online using the hashtag "#PurelyJupiter" to motive others to follow your example.Ā
